Running the Cancer Research Bowood 10k

Near Chippenham, Wiltshire
September 2005

This was a really tough race!

The course was quite hilly, which was bad news going up, as it was very tiring, but also bad news coming down as some of the hills were steep and it was difficult to maintain balance.

The course was mostly forest track and due to recent rain was very muddy in places. This added to the challenge as we had to be careful not to slip, particularly as the following Sunday was the Bristol Half Marathon and an injury today would no doubt have prevented me from participating in that race.

I was aiming to complete the race in less than 60 minutes. For some of the race I was on target and ran some 6-minute kilometres, but around the 8k mark I was very tired and had a few more hills to face.

I was disappointed at the 9k mark to see I had only 3 minutes to go until the hour I was aiming for was up, and at that point I wanted to stop and cry! But I kept going, despite having no energy left, and eventually finished in 64 minutes with an average heart rate of 170 beats per minute - phew!
